Artist Statement
I have long been inspired by natural world, from its wondrous array of life forms and their ingenious adaptations to Earth’s complex cycles and interweaving systems. This fascination with the workings of nature extends from the subatomic world to the farthest reaches of space. And we humans are inextricably linked to it all. I marvel at the capacity of human awareness to bridge objective and subjective realities, unifying the intellect, intuition, and senses into a powerful tool to deepen our understanding of, and connection with, the universe we live in.
The sculptures I create reflect this evolving worldview and give form and rhythm to the feeling states that have most influenced my life’s journey—quiet resolve, tranquility, and joy.
I usually start each sculpture with a visual idea that I develop with a model, or maquette. If I find meaning and beauty in it I proceed with the full-size sculpture, choosing materials that will most effectively express my vision. Modifying and adding new materials can also be part of the process, especially when unexpected insights alter my course. For me, completing a sculpture involves months of concerted effort. This is not a deterrent; rather, I enjoy the discipline of holding onto the big picture for as long as it takes to finish a piece.
In the end, each of my completed sculptures reflects my creative drive to artistically marry matter and spirit. If these works can uplift those who experience them and provide food for thought, then I will have succeeded as an artist.
